Harriet's Hat: An Introduction to Fair Isle knitting

Learn the fundamentals of Fair Isle knitting with Sandra. This class will use the Harriet’s Hat pattern to learn about yarn choice, color theory, yarn floats, knitting with both hands as a way to keep your colors organized, reading a chart and color dominance. As an added benefit, the Harriet pattern was created to raise funds for an MRI machine for Shetland and we are happy to be taking part in their efforts.

The first class will combine lecture with the beginning of the Hat Brim. You will continue to work on the Hat on your own and can come to Sit & Knit the Saturday between classes (or any other Sit & Knit), for additional help, and will get some additional tips and tricks on the last day. This class is great for colorwork beginners or those wanting to increase their confidence.

Yarn is not included in class purchase price. You'll receive 10% off your supplies for this class, including yarn and needles. You can purchase the Harriet Kit or any six skeins of Shetland Spindthrift for your class. We will have the Harriet Kits and yarn ready for purchase next week.

To take this class you should be comfortable knitting in the round (with your preferred method); knitting and purling, and be familiar with the concept of decreasing. Don’t let color work scare you! It’s easier than it looks.

Sandra will be available at all the regularly scheduled Tuesday/Thursday and Saturday sit and knit session to then help you with your homework between classes and help you get this great hat finished!

Class Policies

  • You should receive a class supply list about 2 weeks prior to the class by email unless you have stopped by the shop to get one in person.
  • You may cancel a class up to two weeks prior to class for a full refund.
  • We will only cancel a class if we have to.
  • If you miss part of a multi-session class we can try to get you in the next class with a processing fee (fee is determined by the length of the class) to cover the lost spot in that class.
  • Unless noted as a "hand work class," classes require you to bring your own sewing machine. While we may be able to obtain a loaner machine, it is best to use a machine you're already familiar with; beginners will benefit from learning on the same machine they will use outside of class.
