Machine Quilting 101, An Introduction

This is a hands-on class to introduce the basics of machine quilting. You will learn several types of machine quilting: straight stitch, in the ditch, and a bit of free motion. Concepts discussed include selecting the design and thread to complement the quilt. Book required: Machine Quilting with Style by Christa Watson. Taught by Taffy McLaughlin. Class does not cover construction of a quilt top.

Book (included in class fee): Machine Quilting with Style by Christa Watson

  • Sewing machine, plugs, foot pedal, etc.
  • Thread and loaded bobbin, preferably not color matched
  • Regular presser foot
  • Walking foot
  • Open embroidery foot
  • Free motion foot (clear plastic preferable)
  • Sewing Supplies (Scissors, 24” ruler, pencil, erasable chalk marker, safety pins)
  • Quilting gloves or rubber finger tip grippers
  • A small quilt to practice on. (Not something you cherish).

It is recommended that you make the following quilt: One nine-patch comprised of 4” squares (cut 4 ½”). Stitch the 9-patch together. Add a 1” border (cut 1 1/2”). Add a second border of 2” (cut 2 ½”). This should give you a 18” square practice quilt. Also bring a piece of fabric at least 20” square for the backing. Cotton batting will be provided. Use any colors, solids preferred. No points for style on this one, but accuracy is a big plus.

Topics to be covered include: Making the quilt sandwich (quilt top, batting & backing), threads and needles, straight line quilting, stitch-in-the-ditch, shadow quilting, free motion

If you want suggestions on quilting a project you are working on, feel free to bring it.

Class Policies

  • You should receive a class supply list about 2 weeks prior to the class by email unless you have stopped by the shop to get one in person.
  • You may cancel a class up to two weeks prior to class for a full refund.
  • We will only cancel a class if we have to.
  • If you miss part of a multi-session class we can try to get you in the next class with a processing fee (fee is determined by the length of the class) to cover the lost spot in that class.
  • Unless noted as a "hand work class," classes require you to bring your own sewing machine. While we may be able to obtain a loaner machine, it is best to use a machine you're already familiar with; beginners will benefit from learning on the same machine they will use outside of class.
