June 7, 2018

    It is early June and the heat is finally kicking in. What a great time to have some indoor projects going on! Late Spring and Summer are our slowest times of the year and this month IQF&Y is struggling to cover our overhead. You can help by shopping with us, either in the store or online. If you can't take the time to look for a new project right now, but would love to help, you can purchase a gift certificate (for yourself and/or a friend) that can be used when you are ready to add to your stash or pick up a new project. To help entice you, we will have a 20% off sale in the store and online (using coupon code June18) from now until Saturday at 5 p.m. (Eastern time) when we close. We'll even honor the discount if you purchase a gift certificate now to use later --  so basically, you buy yourself a discount when you want to use it! In case you don't know, we now have shipping options on our website for Canada, making it mush easier to order from there than previously. Yay!

    To further entice you, we have brand new fabric in the shop that you can get on sale the next few days. We've always had a love for Aboriginal designs and the newest arrivals from M&S Textiles Australia have us considering all kinds of projects. We just added 46 bolts plus a selection of 2-1/2" strips rolls (in two colors), 5" squares and 10" squares.

    Batik fabrics are a perennial favorite among folks and we try to find designs that will work with a variety of quilting and sewing projects. The new Marine Batiks from Michael Miller Fabrics feature some of our favorite sea creatures in vibrant colors. And we've added several more of the Lava batik basics from Anthology Fabrics. The near-solid batiks add great pops of saturated color where you need them.

    The start of summer brings our first shipment of Christmas fabric. It's hard to think about holiday sewing when the pool beckons but Way Up North by Jill Howarth was too cute to resist. Santa, reindeer and snowmen dot the three colorways (which all coordinate). Available as yardage, 5" squares and fat quarter bundles.

    Next Tuesday, 6/12, Nell Zirolli will be in the shop at 5 p.m. for a Yarn WIP session. She'll be here until 8 p.m. -- bring your yarn WIP (work in progress) for a fun evening of knitting with friends.
Nell can help you with
almost anything knitting related so come with your "fix-it" problems, pattern, yarn or technique questions, or just come get some good, uninterrupted knitting time. She is willing to teach during the day on Wednesday, 6/13, if anyone would like to have a class or WIP time with her. You could have a mini knitting retreat here on 6/12 and 6/13 -- what fun! Sign up for Tuesday evening here and email us with your interest for Wednesday.

    In quilt-related news this week, we have Shannon Brinkley, a quilt/fabric designer, author and national teacher, coming from Texas to teach in late September. Shannon will be teaching one Color Confidence class and two Scrappy Appliqué classes. There are limited spots in both classes and sign-ups began last week (it pays to add yourself to our early notification list!).

Color Confidence Wednesday, 9/26/2018, $130

Scrappy Applique Thursday, 9/27, or Friday, 9/28/2018, $150

      We have some fun summer classes coming up soon! Sign up now to learn knitting or crocheting, sew your first knit tee, or even casting on your first pair of socks.  Local knitter Allison Adams is leading our Knitting Studio in July. We also have several teachers who can schedule private lessons for sewing, quilting, knitting and crochet. Email us for more information. And don't miss out on these classes:

     * Cast on to Knit (Continental)
     * Knit Tee
     * Beginning Quilt Making
     * Sock Knitting 101
     * Knitting Studio

     Mark your calendar for this year's Row by Row Experience! This year's theme is Sew Musical and the event kicks off 6/21 with some all new Row shapes to collect as you travel this summer. We've got a cool Row this year that pays homage to a well-known local band. We'll reveal our Row in a Facebook Live video on Friday, 6/1, and include it in next week's newsletter, too!

     Happy stitching,

Sarah & the IQF&Y crew

P.S. Don't forget we are closed on Monday! We're open 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and Sunday we are open from 12-4 p.m.

The class is taught in 4 sessions (4 hours each) and requires homework and a sewing machine, although we do have two sewing machines you can reserve to use in the shop for class with a $25 deposit that will be returned to you when the classes are done. A sense of humor is also helpful. Taught by Sarah Oliver.

Knitting/Crocheting Classes

(Also a great refresher class if you haven't knitted for awhile.) Many crocheters find it easier to knit Continental, which involves holding the yarn in the left hand instead of the right hand (English style knitting). Practice the technique and make a washcloth or continue knitting until you have a scarf. You'll leave the class with your first project in progress. Supplies included. Taught by Mary Abreu.

Knitting Studio
Sundays, 7/1 & 7/22/18, 3-4:30 pm $45
Do you have a knitting project you'd like to get started on but feel just a little intimidated about jumping in? What about one you'd like to get finished but can't figure out exactly what the pattern is telling you, or can't find the time to make yourself get it done? Knitting Studio might be the class you need! Three hours of help from an accomplished and knowledgeable teacher. Bring your pattern/project and let Allison Adams help you get started, motivated or finished.

Learn to Knit
You can learn how to get started knitting during our weekly sit and knit. Just reserve your spot for only $5 prior to that day (either in store, online or by phone) and we will make sure there is someone there dedicated to teaching you how for the first hour of the morning sit & knit. We've found tis is a great way for folks to learn. They can then sit with the teacher for awhile knitting and get help learning how to fix little mistakes as they arise. We've had great feedback on teaching knitting this way versus a separate class. We are happy to set up a class for you though or private lessons that work better for your schedule. Email us to let us know your wishes.
