March 1, 2019

We had a wet and wonderful week in Nashville, vending at The Modern Quilt Guild's Quiltcon show (which will be in Atlanta in 2021) while the rest of the crew held down the fort at the shop. Our attention is now on the upcoming Greater Atlanta Quilt Shop Hop, which is less than a month away. This is the 20th year of the hop and it's definitely going to be a can't-miss event! Click the link to head over to the hop's Facebook page to see all the shops, take part in some giveaways and get a preview of what you can expect at this year's event.

Now that we're back from Quiltcon, we've got some great new quilts to share that we made with Debbie Maddy's latest fabrics for Moda: Nuno, Boro and the Boro Wovens. We've got kits of our Boro Woven Nine Patch and our Shibori Sprinkles quilts plus samples made with the 2 Fat Quarter Bucket (pattern plus interfacing) and Gadget Cushion rest (with QuiltSmart interfacing and walnut shells). These were a big hit at Quiltcon and our inventory is low so get yours while you can!

If you love Elizabeth Hartman's quilts, you won't want to miss our new Robert Kaufman kits she created to go with some of her patterns. Each is made with a selection of Elizabeth's fabrics as well as coordinating Kona solids and/or Essex linen blend fabrics. We only have a limited number of each kit (Sea Urchins, Lisa the Unicorn and Delightful Desert) plus a handful of Violet Craft's Elevated Abstraction: Desert Mirage -- get yours before they are gone!

We've added even more of our favorite leggings to to the shop, perfect for wearing the a dress or tunic you've sewn with your favorite fabric (our Dress No. 2 class is coming up soon)! Our latest shipment of Wearables by XCVI arrived right before we left for Quiltcon. Our Jetter leggings are now available in White and Mountain Meadow (a lovely aqua). We've also introduced the Malanda pants to our inventory, which are just as stretchy and comfy as the other styles but also have pockets!

If you've been wanting to make a new garment but have concerns about getting the fit just right, don't miss our upcoming Dress No. 2 class. Chrissy Weeks will guide you through the process of fitting the pattern, making a muslin and creating a tunic or dress you'll proudly wear! Our current class line up will help you learn hand embroidery, sewing, quiltmaking or machine quilting, too. Register now for these classes (scroll down to the Classes section for more information):

CLASSES

 Quilting/Sewing Classes

Sit & Stitch (Fabric)
Fridays, 11 am-1 pm
Drop in any time during the posted hours for some quilt piecing by hand fun with friends! (We recommend bringing a snack so you can pop downstairs for a quick bite to stay energized for a full day of stitching.)

Open Sew
Weekdays (check Calendar for availability), 10 am-4 pm $10
Bring your machine and supplies to our classroom space and work on your sewing and quilting projects.

English Paper-Piecing Club
First Saturday of the month (next date 3/2/19), 9:30 am-1 pm $15
Sometimes it is good to take a break from doing everything fast. English paper piecing is a great way to slow down and enjoy the process of creating. This is the time where you can bring in any project that you are working on or want to begin working on and we can help/encourage/get inspired by each other. This group will meet on the 1st Saturday from 9:30am-1pm. $90 for the year or $15 per month if you would like to pay monthly.

Sewing 101
Sunday, 3/10/19, 12:30-4 pm $70
Whether you've never sewn before or just need a refresher because you haven't sewn in years, our Sewing 101 class will get you stitching in no time! This class covers all the basics including how to thread your sewing machine (including how to wind a bobbin), sewing terminology, essential tools, how to read a pattern and more. You'll leave the class with a small, finished project and an enthusiasm for your new hobby! Taught by Mary Abreu.

Dress No. 2
Saturdays, 3/16 & 3/23/19, 1-5 pm $175
Join Chrissy Weeks to make Dress No. 2 from 100 Acts of Sewing in a two-part class.
Our goal is a flattering and comfortable fit via making a muslin and then constructing the final garment in your choice of fabrics. You will enjoy having this simple but versatile garment (it makes a great tunic, too!) as part of your Spring wardrobe. Note: This class is a prerequisite for our Dress No. 2 hacking class later this spring.

Hand Embroidery 101
Sunday, 3/24/19, 12:30-3:30 pm $60
Have you been admiring all the patterns available that incorporate embroidery designs into quilting, bags, kitchen accessories, etc? Patterns from designers like Crabapple Hill and This and That are bringing us a new, fresh approach to using embroidery in our quilting and sewing. In this class, we will discuss transfer techniques, fabric choices, and basic embroidery to get you ready to make your own project.

Quiltmaking 101
Thursdays, 3/28, 4/11, 4/25 & 5/9, 9:30am-1:30 pm $200
Are you ready to make your first quilt? Our Quiltmaking 101 class (formerly Beginning Quilt Making) will give you all the essential tips, tricks and know-how to make your quilting dreams come true. Our instructors are experienced quilters, eager to share their knowledge with you as you make a lap-size quilt from start to finish. You'll learn a variety of valuable techniques and terms, such as cutting, strip piecing, seam allowance, pin-basting, quilting, binding and more. We break up the class into four, 4-hour sessions, with "homework" you'll do in between sessions. A sewing machine is required for this class. Don't have one? We have two sewing machines you can reserve to use in the shop for class with a $25 deposit that will be returned to you when the classes are done. Taught by Sarah Oliver (weekday sessions). Three student minimum.

Machine Quilting 101
Saturday, 3/30/19, 10am-1 pm $80
This is a hands-on class to introduce the basics of machine quilting. You will learn several types of machine quilting: straight stitch, in the ditch, and a bit of free motion. Concepts discussed include selecting the design and thread to complement the quilt. Book required and included in class fee: Machine Quilting by Sue Nickels. Taught by Taffy McLaughlin. Class does not cover construction of a quilt top.

Sewing Studio
Sunday, 3/31/19, noon-4 pm $70
Ready to tackle a new sewing challenge? Bring the clothing or purse pattern of your choice (with all the supplies listed on the back of the pattern) and our instructor will help you from start to finish. Get help choosing the proper size, cutting, construction and finishing techniques. Given the individualized nature of this class, class size is limited to four students. Taught by Mary Abreu

Knitting/Crocheting Classes

Please note: We have added a $1 charge for all our Sit & Knit sessions so that we may be able to collect a list of who will be coming ahead of time (the system won't let us take sign-ups for free) and that way we can let you know if something happens to prevent us having a teacher there. Please do register for the specific session you want to come to, to let us know if you will be joining.

Tuesday evening Sit & Stitch (Yarn)
Every Tuesday, 5-8 pm $1
Drop in any time during the posted hours for some yarn fun with friends! Crocheters are welcome, too! This is great for beginners especially, as knitting near more experienced knitters allows for you to get immediate help with questions and mistakes which then helps you learn to recognize mistakes yourself and gives you the practice time to get better with your knitting. Please sign up to let us know you will be at the sit & knit.

Thursday Sit & Stitch (Yarn)
Thursdays, 10 am-1 pm $1
Drop in any time during the posted hours for some yarn fun with friends! Crocheters are welcome, too! This is great for beginners especially, as knitting near more experienced knitters allows for you to get immediate help with questions and mistakes which then helps you learn to recognize mistakes yourself and gives you the practice time to get better with your knitting.

Saturday Sit & Stitch (Yarn)
Every other Saturday, 10 am-1 pm (next date: 2/23/2019) $1
Drop in any time during the posted hours for some yarn fun with friends! Crocheters are welcome, too! Sweater Knit-along
Sunday, 3/24/19 (more dates to come), 1-4 pm
Join our "Secret Sweater Stitching Society*" on the fourth Sunday of the month to hang out with other sweater knitters! (*It's not really a secret.)

Knitting 101 by reservation
You can learn how to get started knitting during our weekly sit and knit. Just reserve your spot for $40 prior to that day (either in store, online or by phone) and we will make sure there is someone there dedicated to teaching you how for the first hour of the morning sit & knit. Yarn and knitting needles included! We've found it is a great way for folks to learn. They can then sit with the teacher for awhile knitting and get help learning how to fix little mistakes as they arise. We've had great feedback on teaching knitting this way versus a separate class. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the session. We are also happy to set up a class for you though or private lessons that work better for your schedule. Email us to let us know your wishes.

COUPONS
Our IQF&Y loyalty program earns you points towards a 20% off reward good on all in-stock, regularly price merchandise. We are happy to add your existing IQ cards to our system; just bring them in with your name and email address written on them.
