Holiday hours, new classes and kits plus a Small Business Saturday in-store charity event!

Nov. 22, 2019

The trees have finally started showing off their fall colors and the temperature has stayed consistently cooler, so it's fair to say fall has finally arrived. The change of seasons has inspired us to get cranking out holiday gifts, from quilts to knitted hats and more. If you're ready to ramp up your craftiness, you won't want to miss some of the latest classes and kits to arrive at IQ!

Thanksgiving is next week and our hours will be different for the holiday week. We will be closed as usual on Monday, 11/25, as well as Thursday, 11/28. On Wednesday, 11/27, we will be closing at 2 p.m.

The holiday season has us thinking of those less fortunate, especially as the temperatures drop. We are using our crafting skills for others' benefit and knitting/crocheting hats for the homeless, starting with an in-store sit-and-stitch on Small Business Saturday, 11/30, from noon until 4 pm. Bring yarn and your needles/hooks. We also have a limited amount of donated yarn you can use to make a hat or two. We think Louis Boria's Bushwick Convertible is a great pattern for this (big yarn, fast knit) and we'll even give a free copy of the pattern to the first five people who come to sit and knit with us that day. If you've never made a hat, that's fine! We'll have someone on hand who can help you get going and give a little help if you run into a problem. Let's warm up the winter for those in need!

Our friend Christine Cox (indigo_madder on Instagram) is an enthusiastic knitter and we're looking forward to her first knitting class for us in December. She's teaching an introduction to cable knitting via the
Vancouver Fox Fingerless Gloves. This project uses worsted weight yarn which is a great weight to use when tackling a new technique. You'll be surprised at how quickly they knit up, which means you can cast on and finish in time to wrap up and give a pair for the holidays (if you can give them up, that is)!

New shop sample alert! It was love at first sight when we saw Miss Make's Looper Quilt pattern pop up in our social media feed and we couldn't wait to pull together a sample and kit for the shop. Our Looper Quilt kit uses a softer rainbow of Add it Up blenders by Alexia Abegg for Ruby Star Society with a Kona Snow background. Grab your kit now and then sign up for our Looper Quilt class in January 2020 with Miss Make herself, Devon IottDevon is the Brand Manager for Ruby Star Society and a talented sewist who has taught at a variety of shops and workshops around the country.

We were inspired to create another new kit and forthcoming sample while looking at versions of Modern Handcraft's Snowflake quilt on Instagram. You wouldn't believe how quickly we were pulling a range of aquas and whites to cut into! Sandy is hard at work on the sample but we already have the Blue Snowflake Quilt Kits available for purchase so you, too, can get started on this striking quilt.

We are excited to host Cornelia Hamilton of Hamilton Yarns on Saturday, 12/7, from 10 am-1 pm! Cornelia is a well-known knitting designer whose work is featured in the latest edition of Vogue Knitting. She also has a lovely line of yarn that she will have in the shop 12/7 & 8 that you will be able to check out in person and even purchase. Stop in to meet Cornelia, see some beautiful yarn and chat about classes at IQF&Y with her for 2020!

We'll discuss ways to organize your color/fabric selections, and how to vary the layout of blocks to individualize your quilt. You can even (if you must) dispense advice. And they can sleep on it.

Knitting/Crocheting Classes

Vancouver Fog Fingerless Gloves
Saturdays, 12/7 & 12/14/2019, 9:30 am-noon, $60
Christine Cox will teach you the circular tubular cast on method and get you started on the cables 12/7. Come back on Saturday, 12/14/19 to work on the thumb gusset and binding off your project. You're welcome to visit any of our regular sit and knit with Sandra in between sessions.

Knitting 101 by reservation
You can learn how to get started knitting during our weekly sit and knit or we can set up a time that works better for your schedule. Just reserve your spot for $40 prior to that day (either in store, online or by phone) and we will make sure there is someone there dedicated to teaching you how for the first hour of the morning sit & knit. Yarn and knitting needles included! We've found it is a great way for folks to learn. They can then sit with the teacher for awhile knitting and get help learning how to fix little mistakes as they arise. We've had great feedback on teaching knitting this way versus a separate class. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the session. If you would like to set up a private one-on-one, sign up online and then email us to let us know what dates work for you.
