Dec. 3, 2019

Brrrrr! The weather definitely feels like December. It's a good time to be a quilter and yarn crafter since we get to use those skills to make cozy things to cuddle under! We're gearing up for the holidays and having so much fun helping folks who are shopping for gifts to make or give. Several of us have been on a knitting kick with me cranking out a cowl and 3 hats in the last few weeks and Mary, Pogo, Sandy and Sandra all knitting up a storm. Yes, there is definitely time for us to teach you to make a cowl or some fingerless gloves or even a hat or three before the holidays! This newsletter is jam-packed with new products (hint: Ruby Star Society), special events (Cornelia Hamilton), cool classes (both knitting and sewing), Giving Tuesday causes, plus our special 12 Days of Deals.

Our 12 Days of Deals continues today! We'll be sending an email each day, as well as posting on social media, with the link to that day's deal. Some of the items will be in stock and others will be available for pre-order. Deals will be up at 10 a.m. EST each day and stay "live" until 9 p.m. or until sold out, whichever comes first.

Today's deals: Sugarbush Itty Bitty yarn and the pink Oliso Mini Iron with Trivet! We love Sugarbush yarn and the Itty Bitty is a great weight for everything from socks to shawls to blankets. Mix up solids with the variegated or go for all one color to cuddle up with the cozy! Oliso is known for its irons and the mini iron is perfect for taking to classes and retreats or just to use by your sewing machine. Our Itty Bitty yarn deal is in stock now and the Oliso Mini Iron is a special order item we expect to be in stock by 12/24/2019. Click through to see the amazing discounts on these deals!

Saturday, 12/7, is the big day as we host Cornelia Hamilton of Hamilton Yarns from 10 am-1 pm! Cornelia is a well-known knitting designer whose work is featured in the latest edition of Vogue Knitting. She also has a lovely line of yarn that she will have in the shop 12/7 & 8 that you will be able to check out in person and even purchase. Stop in to meet Cornelia, see some beautiful yarn and chat about classes at IQF&Y with her for 2020!

That squealing you heard across town was a very excited member of the IQ crew unboxing the new Darlings line from Ruby Star Society. Melody Miller, Sarah Watts, Alexia Abegg, Kim Kight and Rashida Coleman-Hale have released a collection featuring some of their favorite prints from previous fabric lines. Tiny tigers, fried eggs, tangrams, octopii and more are printed in a range of bold colors that coordinate beautifully with the existing Ruby Star pieces. We're also expecting Rashida's Speckled line to arrive any moment (get your earplugs ready), which is perfect timing since I've just finished binding our shop sample made with that line. Keep an eye on our social media for news it's here, as well as links to the fat quarter bundle to make this gorgeous quilt!

Don't miss out on your chance to make the Vancouver Fog Fingerless Gloves. This is a great introduction to cable knitting and Christine Cox has lots of great tips to make these one of your favorite accessories during cooler weather. They're made with a heavier weight of yarn, which means they'll knit up quickly (you could even make a pair to gift this holiday season).

Today is Giving Tuesday and we've already been thinking of more ways we can give back. Through the 17 years we've been part of the greater Atlanta community, we've supported Quilts of Valor, Quilts for Kids, the Just 4 U Bee (Gwinnett Quilt Guild), Atlanta Community Food Bank, Doggie Harmony Dog Rescue, ConKerr Cancer/Ryan's Case for Smiles and many others. We kicked off our hat knitting for charity this past weekend and will continue to make and collect hats for distribution to the homeless, preemies, as well as the anti-bullying campaign #HatsNotHate. Today, we're kicking off our annual Toys for Tots collection drive. For both of those causes, if you bring in full skeins (no partial skeins) of yarn that still have the label on them (for hats) and/or a new unwrapped toy (Toys for Tots) today through Sunday, 12/8, we'll give you 10 points on your reward account for each.

Thanks to the generosity of Scott Fortunoff of Jaftex Corp.(Free Spirit Fabrics), we're also giving away a brand-new sewing machine with accessories plus some fabric and other items to someone who really needs it (not just an upgrade), whether they've experienced a significant loss or a major change in life circumstances or maybe a young person who is interested in sewing for college or a charity project and doesn't have a machine. We need your help to find the right person for this life-changing gift. Please email us your nominations for someone in the metro Atlanta area who would benefit from this giveaway and why you are nominating her/him.

Be sure to scroll down to the Classes section of the newsletter for all the great things we've got scheduled in the next few weeks plus into next year. Whether you need some quick gifts to whip up or want to expand your skills, we've got you covered!

Denyse Schmidt: Cog+Wheel
Thursday, 2/6/2020, 10 am-4 pm, $200
Inspired by a quilt pattern from 1902, Cog and Wheel hurtles us back to the industrial age with a playfully bold graphic that rolls right on any bed. Spend the day sewing with Denyse in this class where you will make your own version of her Cog and Wheel quilt pattern! We'll discuss ways to organize your color/fabric selections, and how to vary the layout of blocks to individualize your quilt. I'll guide you through cutting and piecing, and we'll have time to discuss how quilts reflect our culture and historic context.

Denyse Schmidt: The Proverbial Quilt
Sunday, 2/9/2020, 10 am-4 pm, $200
The Proverbial Quilt class will use Denyse's pattern inspired by early "talking" quilts. These quilts often featured quotes from the Bible, or commemorated public events. My version is an amalgamation of proverbs and fortunes from cookies, and the original pattern includes the entire alphabet so you can "customize, personalize, editorialize or memorialize. You can even (if you must) dispense advice. And they can sleep on it.

Knitting/Crocheting Classes

Vancouver Fog Fingerless Gloves
Saturdays, 12/7 & 12/14/2019, 9:30 am-noon, $60
Christine Cox will teach you the circular tubular cast on method and get you started on the cables 12/7. Come back on Saturday, 12/14/19 to work on the thumb gusset and binding off your project. You're welcome to visit any of our regular sit and knit with Sandra in between sessions.

Knitting 101 by reservation
You can learn how to get started knitting during our weekly sit and knit or we can set up a time that works better for your schedule. Just reserve your spot for $40 prior to that day (either in store, online or by phone) and we will make sure there is someone there dedicated to teaching you how for the first hour of the morning sit & knit. Yarn and knitting needles included! We've found it is a great way for folks to learn. They can then sit with the teacher for awhile knitting and get help learning how to fix little mistakes as they arise. We've had great feedback on teaching knitting this way versus a separate class. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the session. If you would like to set up a private one-on-one, sign up online and then email us to let us know what dates work for you.
