Jan. 28, 2020

The first month of 2020 is almost over. What kind of progress are you making on your UFOs and WIPs? The best way to knock them out is with the support of friends, whether you sign up for one of our FREE open sews, sit and stitches (we offer them for both fabric and yarn) or UFO sew days. We've even got Facebook groups where you can interact with your IQF&Y friends online to keep you on track! Check out our Calendar to see all the groups and activities we have going on!

Want to get a birthday treat from IQF&Y? Tell us your special day the next time you shop in store and you'll get a little something via email on your birthday! It's a great way to celebrate you!

We're excited to be adding another 42 bolts of Kona cotton solids from Robert Kaufman Fabrics to the shelves this week. It's so much fun to see the palette grow with each shipment, which includes a range of colors from the collection -- even the neutrals! We're well on our way to bringing in the entire range of Kona solids on the digitally printed Kona color chart fabric seen below and ready for you to snap up!

Looking to make the perfect baby gift? We've got just what you need! Windham Fabric's new Dream line by Jill McDonald includes a Milestone Mat that will help new parents track baby's growth over the course of the first year. The animals are super cute and the colors are not only unisex but totally on trend with contemporary nurseries. We've even got a few coordinates you can use for backing and binding!

If you or someone you know has been wanting to learn how to make a quilt, don't miss the next session of our popular Quiltmaking 101. Dave Bellevue teaches all the ins and outs of making a quilt, from prepping fabric to cutting to piecing and quilting. This is the essential class for learning how to make a quilt and our next session starts this Sunday! Sign up now and get ready to get fired up for one of our favorite hobbies.

We've got lots of other great classes coming up, too, including a new session of the always-popular Fabric Painting and Dyeing class with Casey Green. Casey is a talented artist and will teach you lots of fun, useful ways to play with a variety of dyes and paints. Sarah Oliver is back with our EQ8 introductory class, a must for anyone interested in using the quilt design software. Our Sewing 101 gives new sewing enthusiasts a jump start into sewing. If you've always wanted to knit two socks at a time but were intimidated by Magic Loop, our Two-at-a-Time Socks, Toe Up! knitting class will help you conquer your first pair. Quiltmaking 101
Sundays, 2/2, 2/16, 3/1 & 3/15/2020, noon-4 pm, $200
Are you ready to make your first quilt? Our Quiltmaking 101 class will give you all the essential tips, tricks and know-how to make your quilting dreams come true. Our instructors are experienced quilters, eager to share their knowledge with you as you make a lap-size quilt from start to finish. You'll learn a variety of valuable techniques and terms, such as cutting, strip piecing, seam allowance, pin-basting, quilting, binding and more. We break up the class into four, 4-hour sessions, with "homework" you'll do in between sessions. A sewing machine is required for this class. Don't have one? We have two sewing machines you can reserve to use in the shop for class with a $25 deposit that will be returned to you when the classes are done. Taught by David Bellevue.

Denyse Schmidt: Cog+Wheel
Thursday, 2/6/2020, 10 am-4 pm, $200
Inspired by a quilt pattern from 1902, Cog and Wheel hurtles us back to the industrial age with a playfully bold graphic that rolls right on any bed. Spend the day sewing with Denyse in this class where you will make your own version of her Cog and Wheel quilt pattern! We'll discuss ways to organize your color/fabric selections, and how to vary the layout of blocks to individualize your quilt. I'll guide you through cutting and piecing, and we'll have time to discuss how quilts reflect our culture and historic context.

Denyse Schmidt: The Proverbial Quilt
Sunday, 2/9/2020, 10 am-4 pm, $200
The Proverbial Quilt class will use Denyse's pattern inspired by early "talking" quilts. These quilts often featured quotes from the Bible, or commemorated public events. My version is an amalgamation of proverbs and fortunes from cookies, and the original pattern includes the entire alphabet so you can "customize, personalize, editorialize or memorialize. You can even (if you must) dispense advice. And they can sleep on it.

Sewing 101
Saturday, 2/22/2020, 9:30 am-12:30 pm, $70
Whether you've never sewn before or just need a refresher because you haven't sewn in years, our Sewing 101 class will get you stitching in no time! This class covers all the basics including how to thread your sewing machine (including how to wind a bobbin), sewing terminology, essential tools, how to read a pattern and more. You'll leave the class with a small, finished project and an enthusiasm for your new hobby! Taught by Mary Abreu.

Painted Quilt Block with Regina Carter
Saturday, 2/22/2020, 1-5 pm, $100
Join Regina Carter for a fun class like nothing you've made before. Regina provides a quilted block that she'll then teach you to finish with paint sticks. It's a great way to create one-of-a-kind quilt art. All supplies are included in your class fee. Due to the nature of this class, registration will close Tuesday, 12/31/2019, and any class cancellations must be done by that date, as well.

EQ8
Thursday, 2/27/2020, 10 am-12:30 pm, $45
Electronic Quilter is the gold standard of quilt design software but can be a little intimidating for someone just starting out with it. Sarah Oliver will get you started using this great software for designing quilts. Bring your laptop computer and a notebook and pen/pencil for taking notes. If you do not already own EQ8, the instructor will send you a link to install a trial version prior to the day of the class.Taught by Sarah Oliver.

Fabric Painting & Dyeing with Casey Green
Saturday, 2/29/2020, 10 am-4 pm, $100
Have you ever wished you had a certain fabric for a project and just could not find something that matched your vision? This class is a great way to learn how to alter fabric (you can bring an ugly piece from your stash to work on) to create a different piece that works for you. Don't miss an opportunity to learn from Casey Green, as she is so talented with this art form. She spends hours prepping the class for you and has the classroom filled with all kinds of supplies for you to play with to help you decide which supplies and processes you like the best and want to explore further. A $10 cash materials fee is due on the day of the class, payable to the teacher.

Knitting/Crocheting Classes

Knitting 101 by reservation
You can learn how to get started knitting during our weekly sit and knit or we can set up a time that works better for your schedule. Just reserve your spot for $40 prior to that day (either in store, online or by phone) and we will make sure there is someone there dedicated to teaching you how for the first hour of the morning sit & knit. Yarn and knitting needles included! We've found it is a great way for folks to learn. They can then sit with the teacher for awhile knitting and get help learning how to fix little mistakes as they arise. We've had great feedback on teaching knitting this way versus a separate class. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the session. If you would like to set up a private one-on-one, sign up online and then email us to let us know what dates work for you.

Two-at-a-Time Socks, Toe Up!
Saturdays, 2/29, 3/21, 4/11 & 5/2/2020, 2-4 pm, $80
Avoid "second sock syndrome" by knitting your next pair of socks two-at-a-time on circular needles using the Magic Loop technique and DK weight yarn! We'll start toe up, which makes it even easier to check the fit of your socks as you go. The Winter Weekend sock pattern by Shannon Squire Designs is included in your class fee. This four-session class will start you off with casting on and the toe increases. Subsequent sessions will help you increase for the gusset, shape the heel and tips for a stretchy bind off for your sock cuff. Students should be comfortable with casting on, knitting, purling, and working in the round. No prior sock knitting experience is required. Taught by Mary Abreu.
