Feb. 21, 2020

Our No. 1 class in our 17-plus years of business has been our make-your-first quilt series, where students go through the entire process of making a quilt over four class sessions. We've just added a weekday session of this perennial favorite to our calendar, so now's your chance to learn all the ins and outs of quilting from the delightful Sarah Oliver while making a fun throw-sized quilt. Our Quiltmaking 101 class even makes a great gift for someone you know who has been wanting to learn how to quilt! We're obviously big fans of quilting and we love encouraging people as they explore the hobby.

Have you been in to see the new Kaffe Fassett Collective line that arrived last week? It's just a great range and many of the bolts are already looking a little skinny. We've also restocked a few of my favorite Kaffe Collective oldies because I'm worried the manufacturer is going to start discontinuing some of the older prints in the line. They've already discontinued a few and many of the Free Spirit Essential Solids have been dropped from production, too. We have most of the fabulous PaperweightMillefiore and Roman Glass prints shown in the photo (below) and quite a few of the Free Spirit solids still in stock, although some of those bolts are on the skinny side, too. If you have favorites that aren't part of your stash, you might want to stop in or visit the website to grab up some while we still have them in stock.

Jen Kingwell's 2020 quilt-along program, Psychedelia, is about to start. We just received our shipment of the first month of templates and we bought a couple of extra template sets, which are now available for purchase and you can pick them up starting tomorrow, 2/22/2020! This is a fun quilt that is Jen's homage to the '60s and the Psychedelic Art movement. Each month, you'll receive the block pattern plus templates (acrylic or mylar) to make what you need for your quilt. We have a limited number of template sets available and you are welcome to join any of our open sewing/UFO sewing days (including our handwork groups, if you are hand piecing) to work on your quilt among friends! We can even help pull together fabrics for you -- just email us and let us know.

No matter the weather outside, our classroom is always bright and ready for you to delve into something new! Don't miss out on some of the great classes we've got lined up for the remainder of this month, as well as ones starting in March. Regina Carter's Painted Quilt Block is this Saturday and we've got a couple of spots left and all the supplies are included -- just add you! Our next Fabric Painting and Dyeing class with Casey Green is a full day of fabric fun (only 2 spots left). Explore our EQ8 introductory class with Sarah Oliver's guidance and get ready for designing quilts with software. Mary Abreu is a fanatic when it comes to sock knitting and she's gearing up to teach you how to knit two socks at a time with Magic Loop in our Two-at-a-Time Socks, Toe Up! knitting class (only 3 spots left). Scroll down to the
Classes section of the newsletter for all the details and visit our calendar for the full schedule!

It's not too late to sign up for one of our two Block of the Month programs starting in March. We designed these programs to be shorter than a traditional block-of-the-month program so you can get your quilt done faster and not lose motivation over the course of the year.

    * Wanda Earley will lead the Elementz paper-pieced BOM on the 2nd Saturday of the month, meeting at 9:30 am on the dot each month. You are welcome to stay and sew in the classroom based on classroom availability.

    * Mary Abreu will lead the
Bakers Dozen program, meeting at 9:30 am on the 2nd Saturday of each month (please note the day change). You're welcome to stay and sew in the classroom based on classroom availability. You can purchase one of the two kits we've put together for this program. We have a sample made entirely with Ruby Star Society fabrics (shown on the left below) and Mary has pulled a set of mostly Tula Pink fabric (shown on the right below) that she's making now. Both options are available as a kit (sold separately). There will be a limited number of each of the kits and several orders have come through already so snap yours up before they are gone!

These groups are private so you can make posts in them that only folks in the groups can see. When you join the group, our group admins need to approve your request, which we do as quickly as possible so you can join the fun.

EQ8

Sarah Oliver will get you started using this great software for designing quilts. Bring your laptop computer and a notebook and pen/pencil for taking notes. If you do not already own EQ8, the instructor will send you a link to install a trial version prior to the day of the class. Taught by Sarah Oliver.

Fabric Painting & Dyeing with Casey Green
Saturday, 2/29/2020, 10 am-4 pm, $100
Have you ever wished you had a certain fabric for a project and just could not find something that matched your vision? This class is a great way to learn how to alter fabric (you can bring an ugly piece from your stash to work on) to create a different piece that works for you. Don't miss an opportunity to learn from Casey Green, as she is so talented with this art form. She spends hours prepping the class for you and has the classroom filled with all kinds of supplies for you to play with to help you decide which supplies and processes you like the best and want to explore further. A $10 cash materials fee is due on the day of the class, payable to the teacher.

Quiltmaking 101
Thursdays, 3/5, 3/19, 4/9 & 4/23/20, 10am-2pm, $200
Are you ready to make your first quilt? Our Quiltmaking 101 class (formerly Beginning Quiltmaking) will give you all the essential tips, tricks and know-how to make your quilting dreams come true. Our instructors are experienced quilters, eager to share their knowledge with you as you make a lap-size quilt from start to finish. You'll learn a variety of valuable techniques and terms, such as cutting, strip piecing, seam allowance, pin-basting, quilting, binding and more. Taught by Sarah Oliver.

Paper Piecing UFO Sew Day
Wednesday, 3/11/20, 10am-4 pm
Why not spend a day tackling those paper piecing (or any other quilt related) UFOs that never seem to make it to the top of your to-do list? We'll have a teacher (Wanda Earley) on hand from 10 am-1 pm to answer questions and help you get started on a quilt pattern that you're having a hard time digging into or just be a cheerleader for you to get lots accomplished and help shorten your quilting UFO list. You're welcome to stay and work the rest of the session and make progress on your UFOS!

Hand Embroidery 101
Saturday, 3/21/20, 1:30-4:30 pm, $60
Have you been admiring all the patterns available that incorporate embroidery designs into quilting, bags, kitchen accessories, etc? Patterns from designers like Crabapple Hill and This and That are bringing us a new, fresh approach to using embroidery in our quilting and sewing. In this class, we will discuss transfer techniques, fabric choices, and basic embroidery to get you ready to make your own project. Taught by Wanda Earley.

Knitting/Crocheting Classes

Knitting 101 by reservation
You can learn how to get started knitting during our weekly sit and knit or we can set up a time that works better for your schedule. Just reserve your spot for $40 prior to that day (either in store, online or by phone) and we will make sure there is someone there dedicated to teaching you how for the first hour of the morning sit & knit. Yarn and knitting needles included! We've found it is a great way for folks to learn. They can then sit with the teacher for awhile knitting and get help learning how to fix little mistakes as they arise. We've had great feedback on teaching knitting this way versus a separate class. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the session. If you would like to set up a private one-on-one, sign up online and then email us to let us know what dates work for you.

Two-at-a-Time Socks, Toe Up!
Saturdays, 2/29, 3/21, 4/11 & 5/2/2020, 2-4 pm, $80
Avoid "second sock syndrome" by knitting your next pair of socks two-at-a-time on circular needles using the Magic Loop technique and DK weight yarn! We'll start toe up, which makes it even easier to check the fit of your socks as you go. The Winter Weekend sock pattern by Shannon Squire Designs is included in your class fee. This four-session class will start you off with casting on and the toe increases. Subsequent sessions will help you increase for the gusset, shape the heel and tips for a stretchy bind off for your sock cuff. Students should be comfortable with casting on, knitting, purling, and working in the round. No prior sock knitting experience is required. Taught by Mary Abreu.
