Amazing things in store at IQF&Y during National Quilting/Craft Month!

March 3, 2020

March is both National Quilting Month and National Craft Month and we're ready to celebrate all things crafty here at IQF&Y! If you're struggling to fit crafting time into your schedule, why not make it a priority to join one of our our free crafting sessions at the shop this month? We have times for yarn craftshandwork and UFO sewing times for the machine stitcher. Working among friends (away from home) is a great way to make good progress quickly and stay motivated on your project.

Both observances make March a great time to try your hand at a new craft. We've got some fun classes on the schedule this month where you can learn hand embroidery or  machine quilting. Plus we have two fun block-of-the-month programs -- Elementz and Bakers Dozen --  kicking off Saturday, 3/14/20, that will breakdown making a quilt in smaller chunks over a few months. We even have fabric kits (one with Ruby Star Society, the other mostly Tula Pink) for the Bakers Dozen to take the stress out of planning your quilt. Invest in your interests in March! Scroll down to the Classes section of the newsletter for all the details and visit our calendar for the full schedule!

A little birdie told us that Tula Pink's HomeMade line is shipping soon. Yay! This is Tula's first sewing-themed line and it's full of color and crafty items that are sure to be a hit with the #TulaTroops. We have the entire line available for preorder, and it's not too late to snag your must-have pieces before it arrives in the shop. There are three colorways -- Morning, Noon and Night -- with coordinating wide backing fabrics and we've got yardage and bundles available for preorder. We've already presold a chunk of this line, so if you love it, snap up what you want while it's still available as you might miss out and we are unlikely to be able to get more.

We are placing our first Berroco Yarn order this week! We are ordering Vintage for the Norah's Afghan Knitalong (KAL) Sandra is leading, as well as some Ultra Wool as several folks plan to use it for sweaters they are knitting. We have afghan kits available on the website for preordering and will have individual colors up for preorder soon, too. If you're interested in preordering project quantities of Vintage, Ultra or another Berroco yarn, please email us to discuss this option.

If you're on social media like us, be sure to check out our Facebook and Ravelry groups to help support you in achieving your crafting goals. The Facebook groups are private so you can make posts in them that only folks in the groups can see. Join the fun today!

We, like many of our customers, have been watching the news about the spread of COVID-19 (the coronavirus), which now has two confirmed cases in our area. We keep hearing about cases of the virus that are severe enough to require hospitalization, but apparently it is very likely to have a mild case, much like a cold, that would not make someone feel very ill at all. We ask that if you are sick (whether it be a cold, flu, stomach bug, or even suspect you may have been exposed to coronavirus) that you please refrain from visiting the shop to help limit the spread of any illness. Illnesses that seem minor to many of us can be far more dangerous to a small percentage of the population and we can all do our part to reduce exposure risks by staying home when we're sick. We are always happy to get things in the mail to you or maybe even delivered (we have used Uber to deliver things before) if there is something you really need while recuperating at home.

    Happy stitching,
    Sarah & the IQF&Y crew

Paper Piecing UFO Sew Day
Wednesday, 3/11/20, 10am-4 pm
Why not spend a day tackling those paper piecing (or any other quilt related) UFOs that never seem to make it to the top of your to-do list? We'll have a teacher (Wanda Earley) on hand from 10 am-1 pm to answer questions and help you get started on a quilt pattern that you're having a hard time digging into or just be a cheerleader for you to get lots accomplished and help shorten your quilting UFO list. You're welcome to stay and work the rest of the session and make progress on your UFOS!

Hand Embroidery 101
Saturday, 3/21/20, 1:30-4:30 pm, $60
Have you been admiring all the patterns available that incorporate embroidery designs into quilting, bags, kitchen accessories, etc? Patterns from designers like Crabapple Hill and This and That are bringing us a new, fresh approach to using embroidery in our quilting and sewing. In this class, we will discuss transfer techniques, fabric choices, and basic embroidery to get you ready to make your own project. Taught by Wanda Earley.

Machine Quilting 101
Saturday, 3/21/20, 1:30-4:30 pm, $80
This is a hands-on class to introduce the basics of machine quilting. You will learn several types of machine quilting: straight stitch, in the ditch, and a bit of free motion. Concepts discussed include selecting the design and thread to complement the quilt. Class does not cover construction of a quilt top. Book included in class fee: Machine Quilting with Style by Christa Watson. Taught by Taffy McLaughlin.

Knitting/Crocheting Classes

Knitting 101 by reservation
You can learn how to get started knitting during our weekly sit and knit or we can set up a time that works better for your schedule. Just reserve your spot for $40 prior to that day (either in store, online or by phone) and we will make sure there is someone there dedicated to teaching you how for the first hour of the morning sit & knit. Yarn and knitting needles included! We've found it is a great way for folks to learn. They can then sit with the teacher for awhile knitting and get help learning how to fix little mistakes as they arise. We've had great feedback on teaching knitting this way versus a separate class. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the session. If you would like to set up a private one-on-one, sign up online and then email us to let us know what dates work for you.

Two-at-a-Time Socks, Toe Up!
Saturdays, 2/29, 3/21, 4/11 & 5/2/2020, 2-4 pm, $80
Avoid "second sock syndrome" by knitting your next pair of socks two-at-a-time on circular needles using the Magic Loop technique and DK weight yarn! We'll start toe up, which makes it even easier to check the fit of your socks as you go. The Winter Weekend sock pattern by Shannon Squire Designs is included in your class fee. This four-session class will start you off with casting on and the toe increases. Subsequent sessions will help you increase for the gusset, shape the heel and tips for a stretchy bind off for your sock cuff. Students should be comfortable with casting on, knitting, purling, and working in the round. No prior sock knitting experience is required. Taught by Mary Abreu.
CLUBS

UFO Club with Wanda Earley
First Tuesday of the month, 4:30-7:30 pm Free

By Hand: The Art of Slow Quilting
Third Saturday of the month, 9:30 am-1 pm Free

We will get together and work on quilting projects by hand - hand piecing, English paper piecing, hand appliqué, hand quilting.  This is the time where you can bring in any project that you are working on or want to begin working on and we can help/encourage/get inspired by each other.
