March 31, 2020

Our small pause from the shop has given us time to catch our breath and evaluate what's feasible for the IQF&Y crew, at least for the time being. We plan to resume processing online orders for shipping as soon as today. Our goal is to ship orders Wednesdays and Fridays with a limited number of employees in the shop so that we can comply with our county's shelter-in-place order. At this time, we are unable to continue offering curbside pickup. We will post on Facebook with the hours someone will be at the shop if you need some help with picking out your items over the phone or with text or FaceTime. You are also welcome to send messages through Facebook messenger and one of us will do our best to help you from there.

We have been working to turn our shop patterns into downloadable PDFs and have already begun uploading them to our website. Our "instant gratification" shopping section already has 15 patterns, and more are coming! You will receive a link for downloading your pattern after your purchase. We do recommend downloading to a computer instead of a smartphone or tablet. Be sure to check our website often as we will be continuing to add patterns to this section (we've got a pretty extensive library of shop patterns).

We've been using online tools like Facebook and Instagram to stay connected with you before this shift in our world, so it's likely no surprise that we are continuing those tech explorations as we prepare to launch our first virtual knitalong (KAL)! Sandra already had the wheels in motion for the next shop KAL, Norah's Vintage Afghan, and just a little bit of tweaking is making it possible for her to move it online. We'll be using Zoom when the KAL launches in April. You can take part on your own during our ongoing virtual Crafting Alone, Together! times (formerly known as Sit & Knit). If you would like to take part in the guided virtual classes Sandra is teaching you can sign up here. There is one kit left of the actual colors used in the Norah's Vintage Afghan pattern that you can snap up here but we are also happy to help you pick your own set of colors from the Berroco colors we have in stock or any other yarn we have in stock if you like. We would love to see some folks make it in other colors. You can download the pattern for free on the Berroco website

In all the hustle and bustle at the end of last week, you may have missed Katie's Kep, the
2020 Shetland Wool Week Hat pattern that debuted on Friday. We have quite a few colors of the Jamieson's of Shetland wool in stock, which is perfect for making this hat, and we posted several color combinations the yarn in a Facebook videoYou can see some of the fun color kits Sarah and Mary pulled together below, then head to the website to order your favorite.

We're eagerly awaiting our shipment of Anna Maria Horner's next fabric line, Hindsight (FreeSpirit tells us it should be any day now). We had originally anticipated bringing in far greater quantities of this line, since it will be used in the upcoming Wheelhouse Medallion sewalong that kicks off in June. Given the current uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to scale back our fabric orders and only bring into the shop quantities we feel we can handle. If you have been thinking about taking part in the Wheelhouse Medallion, you still have a few days to sign up. We will cut off sign ups soon (within the next week) so that we can make sure we are allocating our resources in the best way possible.

Wanda is leading a paper-piecing quilt called Elementz. She is working on some virtual meeting times and we have kits left for this fantastic quilt made with Kaffe Fassett Collective prints set into a rich black batik.

Thank you so much for the outpouring of support for our GoFundMe fundraiser for supplies to sew fabric masks for local healthcare workers! We have already begun distributing supplies, thanks to your generosity. We know many of you are excited about working on face masks for health care workers and others. There is a private Facebook group for the Atlanta area where you can find lots of information about making them and where to get them to. We have uploaded a tutorial by Chrissy Weeks to our website that uses 1" strips of knit fabric instead of elastic. We do have some fabric ready for anyone who wants to come get fabric (free) to make masks. Call the shop at 404-634-6924 to let us know you would like some and again when you arrive to pick it up before 3pm today or between 11-3 tomorrow.

Sandra has worked out a way to have virtual craft time using Zoom, which is a free, online platform for spending time together for things like virtual meetings and gatherings. Sandra's trial run of the first virtual Crafting Alone, Together! (formerly known as Sit & Knit) went really well. It was great to connect in this time of separateness. Sandra is reinstating our regularly scheduled Sit & Knit times, but of course all crafters are welcome to join our virtual get together. Join us via the Zoom application, either by video or audio connection. You can join anywhere and anytime on a laptop, tablet or phone. Follow our Facebook Page to find the regularly scheduled times and for yarn folks join our group on Ravelry, to continue yarn craft discussions.

We appreciate any way you can support the shop during this time of great uncertainty, in the hopes we will be able to cover our bills including employee paychecks and other monthly expenses that are common for small businesses.

    Happy stitching,
    Sarah & the IQF&Y crew

Quiltmaking 101

Our instructors are experienced quilters, eager to share their knowledge with you as you make a lap-size quilt from start to finish. You'll learn a variety of valuable techniques and terms, such as cutting, strip piecing, seam allowance, pin-basting, quilting, binding and more. We break up the class into four, 4-hour sessions, with "homework" you'll do in between sessions. A sewing machine is required for this class. Don't have one? We have two sewing machines you can reserve to use in the shop for class with a $25 deposit that will be returned to you when the classes are done. Taught by Sarah Oliver. Three student minimum.

Knitting/Crocheting Classes

Knitting 101 by reservation
You can learn how to get started knitting during our weekly sit and knit or we can set up a time that works better for your schedule. Just reserve your spot for $40 prior to that day (either in store, online or by phone) and we will make sure there is someone there dedicated to teaching you how for the first hour of the morning sit & knit. Yarn and knitting needles included! We've found it is a great way for folks to learn. They can then sit with the teacher for awhile knitting and get help learning how to fix little mistakes as they arise. We've had great feedback on teaching knitting this way versus a separate class. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the session. If you would like to set up a private one-on-one, sign up online and then email us to let us know what dates work for you.

By Hand: The Art of Slow Quilting

We will get together and work on quilting projects by hand - hand piecing, English paper piecing, hand appliqué, hand quilting.  This is the time where you can bring in any project that you are working on or want to begin working on and we can help/encourage/get inspired by each other.
